FAQs
How does one qualify for the Fargo Cadet/Jr. National Teams?

o National Teams are based on performances at the Freestyle & Greco-Roman State Championships, along with Regional events (i.e. Cliff Keen Southeast Regional Championship). Top 2 place-winners of the Virginia FS & GR State Championships automatically qualify for the National Teams. Top 3 [overall] place-winners of Regional events also automatically qualify for the National Teams.

o Those who place under the Top 2 state finishers and Top 3 in a regional event still have the option of petitioning for a spot on the National Team.

I qualified for Fargo and am interested in competing but have not been contacted. What do I do?

Please contact us with your intent to compete on either the national duals team of your respective division or Fargo National Team. Send us an email at suggestions@virginiawrestling.com with the Subject Line “Fargo Interest”—We will then send you the necessary interest form to formally express your interest.

What is the process for petitioning to make a National Team roster?

o If one is interested in petitioning to get onto a national team, please fill out the Wildcard Application Form along with an explanation for your reason of petition and have it emailed to suggestions@virginiawrestling.com with the Subject Line “National Team Petition”
o Along with this emailed form, please send a check for $100 made out to “Virginia Wrestling Association” with “Nat. Team Petition” in the Memo. Send this check to our VP of Finance, Steve Crocker at 905 Pepper Ave, Richmond VA 23226
o A petition is marked valid as soon as our VP of Finance (Steve Crocker) receives it. Just because one petitions does not automatically signify they are on the National Team. Petitions are then reviewed by the coaches committee and notified of acceptance or denial within the week after receiving said petition.

How does one qualify for the Cadet/East Coast Jr. Duals Teams?

Cadet/Jr. Duals Team rosters are selected via top place-winner performances in the Freestyle & Greco-Roman State Championships. If you are interested in competing on the Cadet National Dual Team, please contact our Cadet Director Sonny Close or Junior Director Jon Barr. You can find their contact information at www.virginiawrestling.com/about

Is training camp mandatory?

Yes, Training Camp is a requirement for all National Team members. The purpose of Training Camp is to give all individuals going to Fargo the best opportunity at success when competing at the national stage. This is the lone chance all National Team members have to train together prior to nationals. If a National Team member cannot attend training camp for illegitimate reasons (deemed by the coaching staff), they immediately become ineligible to compete at Fargo.

Can someone who is not on the National Team attend the Training Camp at Virginia Tech?

Yes, we encourage all elite middle school and high school wrestlers not on the National Teams to attend our Training Camp. This gives all the opportunity to train with the best in the state. For those not on the National Team the cost to attend training camp is $115 for commuters and $300 for those staying overnight.

How do we pay?

o All payments will be handled via our totalcamps.com site, please go to totalcamps.com/VAWA and fill out all pertinent information
o There are several payment options that are accepted
§ Pay at once with registration link
§ Pay in custom payments—contact suggestions@virginiawrestling.com with the Subject Line "Fargo Custom Payments"
§ Pay in payment plans mentioned prior

Do I have to pay the total at once?

No, please see our payment options above

Why is the deposit due so soon?

This deposit is to cover your wrestler’s flight to and from Fargo. With Southwest’s group travel protocol, this is standard procedure and we are expected to cover each seat within the week. We apologize for any inconvenience but this is in place to keep cost at as much of a minimum to each individual attending nationals.

Is there any way for us to finance this trip?

Besides the payment options, we highly encourage competitors to fundraise and gain sponsors, you can find the sponsor form at the bottom of http://www.virginiawrestling.com/sponsors

How can I fundraise for this trip?

o The easiest way is through solicitation of family, friends, neighbors, and acquaintances.
o A classic “grind match” is always helpful!
§ How a “grind match” works:
· Use the sponsor sheets to solicit sponsors via friends, family, acquaintances, etc.
· Each sponsor agrees to donate a certain amount of money for each minute (or other designated time) wrestled
· Example: Mrs. Smith agrees to donate $1 for every minute straight that her neighbor Johnny wrestles at a practice. One day, a local club designates as “Grind Match Day” where the club coach administers constant wrestling and times how long the wrestlers battle it out to “Fund Fargo.” This is a sport of honor and integrity; if you opt to complete a grind match, please actually do so. Sponsors donate money to individuals because they are proud of said individual’s accomplishments and want them to succeed just as much as the individual does him/herself at the national tournament.
· Please coordinate any grind matches with your local clubs.

Is there a discount of any sort for families or teams with multiple wrestlers?

No. We apologize for any inconvenience but Fargo pricing can only be set for individuals.

Are there any other discount options?

No. We apologize for any inconvenience but Fargo pricing is set in stone after an expansive and diligent period of cost analysis to try to bring the cost down as much as possible and ensure all competitors are covered for all expenses mentioned previously.

What should we expect of the national tournament?

This is a prestigious event—the largest wrestling tournament in the world, in which you are representing your hometown and state. This tournament is not a walk in the park, as with any other national tournament, the level of competition is as tough as it gets. With this being said, all coaches and competitors are expected to have great attitudes while on and off the mat throughout the entire trip. We expect all involved with Team Virginia to show respect for each other and assist in bettering each other to ensure the best possible experience for all parties.

What do we need to bring with us to nationals?

o Anything you need on a daily basis (i.e. toiletries, medicines, lotions, etc.)
o Items of entertainment (i.e. books, MP3s, etc.)—we’ve got some long travel and time to kill ahead

o Anything else you need to compete and ensure you compete at your highest level
o All individuals are responsible for their own items and expected to hold themselves accountable
